So the word passage is used in the sense of conquerors/explorers. Another interpretation Gesture of love being made towards the lady literally stands like a facade and symbol, and I think so because the beholder has an animal face and is a drawing not a real person at all. But tokens are usually hightly respected and honoured, like the symbol of g*d, not real enough to restrain our ill-intended hands. Read more here....
